I needed a new wireless router after getting security cams. My old one just didn t have the bandwidth. It was a TP-Link and had been awesome so I went with the AC3150 from them. It died after 6 months and was so poor a product I didn t have it repaired. I bought this instead. Initial setup was a little weird. You had to go to an Asus website which redirected you to the router. As someone that works in IT, I just want a default ip I can go to, but no you HAVE to go through this once. After the initial setup you can access it through it s ip. Other than that, it s been great. Handles my cams, phones, laptop, wired desktops, streams huge video files to my tv, all without a blip. Glad I bought it. One caveat: to turn on the Trend Micro security functions, you need to agree to give all your browsing data to them. Not a chance Bucko.

This Asus extender allowed me to create a defensible WiFi island of calm and to fight the dark forces of Comcast, which I am beginning to think is run by Darth Vader. I live in one of 200 units in two 8 story towers totally infested with Comcast WiFi enabled cable modems. All of them screaming for attention because all Comcast WiFi enabled cable modems ALSO advertise a wifi connection so if you are a traveling Comcast customer you can get wifi if you are away from home and you happen to be near some other Comcast customer that is also paying for Comcast Internet. Yes Comcast is that sneaky, and from trolling the internet I found that moocher use of a channel on your wifi enabled Comcast cable modem counts toward your Comcast data cap. But if you live in and are surronded by over 200 of those Comcast WiFi screaming beasts , your poor little brand new Asus wifi router cannot always be heard by your Roku, iPhone, iPad, and Mac laptop until.......... This little guy came to the rescue in my two bedroom 900 square foot apartment. All I had to do was plus it in at the other end of my apartment, follow the pictures, downloading the app, putting in the standard password to start it up, and configure it to match my existing Asus router. I will point out that I ended up cleaning up my existing router set up. Simplifying the name and making the old password more secure by making the password more complex. That meant that I ended up having to completely reset the extender repeater. And once I took the time to totally read the instructions and read all the app screens that you install on you smart phone, it s not hard at all. But when I was done....... Now all my wifi enabled gear works with ABSOLUTELY NO INTERFERENCE. Take that Darth Vader and the dark Comcast empire. I now have WiFi peace and quiet. Additional notes This unit especially helps with WiFi devices that ONLY operate on the combination of WiFi and DHCP. I have Bose wireless SoundLink speakers in every room. This device kept them operating more reliabily. The don t drop in or out any more.

ve been using the AX1800 (the cheapest in the family) for about a week now. I m not a gamer, but we do stream a lot of TV Movies and it s held up really well. Wifi6 works with the iphone 11 although I don t have any other devices. i have Dual WAN setup with an old android phone there in case Spectrum goes out and so far everything seems pretty good. Setup was easy, plug in the cables where they go and look for the asus ssid on your computer (or plug your computer into it with an ethernet cable) and then it ll step you through getting it up and running. The basics are really done for you. The tip though, with many cable providers its best to unplug turn off your cable modem for 10 mins or so before plugging it into the new router so it forgets the mac address of the old one. Could just be a spectrum thing, but it was perfect and started working immediately. The bad, I ve got a hard drive plugged into the other (USB3) port and have it setup for time capsule, but it s unusably slow. Plugged in with ethernet (gigabit) it took 14 hours for the initial 150GB backup and then a day later let me know it was corrupt, repeating caused the same issue. No biggie, I ll plug that into my raspbery pi, but would have been nice to have it off the router. s about it. Everything works well and seems to cover our 3000sq ft brick house pretty well, and in the future I can always add another asus router and use AiMesh.

Upgraded from a Asus RT-N66U to the AX56U and was very impressed with the performance gain and range improvement (1500sq ft.). However I was rather annoyed that the WiFi seemed to be resetting in less than a 24hr period everyday and had no idea why! There was a Firmware update which I applied but I was still getting the WiFi reset issue. Well, I solved the problem! When you log into the router to change it s settings go under the LAN settings then into the DHCP server settings and you will see a line item named Lease Time which mine was set to some oddball number of seconds that equal 17.4hrs. What this means is that after 17.4hrs the lease expires and the router re-issues all the IP addresses on the entire network over again thus re-setting all the WiFi devices! So first I increased this value to 170000 which is about 48hrs and violas! No resetting until 48hrs so I then set the value to 604800 which is 7days and have my router set to re-start every Saturday at 3am which is every 6days meaning now my router is no longer resetting the WiFi constantly and has now been stable! My previous Asus router did not have a Lease Time or was disabled so, I never had this problem before. I have 32 devices max connected to my router and have not run into any IP issues yet but, If you have many devices that connect disconnect than you may want to stick the lower Lease Time of avoid IP address issues. My devices are pretty much always connected so, no issue for me. Anyway, I hope this helps some users and have read other reviews of the frequent WiFi reset issue. For me now without the constant WiFi reset I I m very happy with this router for the price point! One other note! Under the wireless settings the WiFi mode defaults to Auto so I changed that to mixed N,AC, AX which is exactly what I m dealing with and that also seems to have improved things as well.

I saw the other reviews before purchasing this and had my doubts. But I was so impressed with the network card that I had to take the risk to get the network extender that matched the card. The card connected to the WiFi without the network extender got about 40-50mb s download and 20-24 mb s upload speeds. I had 1 bar of WiFi at all times. I knew I was near my modems limit. And getting this to match with your network was really easy. Just plugged into outlet closest to my modem and pushed WPS button on both modem and network extender. Matched up on first attempt. Super easy all I had to do was push buttons. After that, I got over 100 mb s download speed and over 50mb s upload speed with full bar connection to the network extender. I mean I wasn t expecting a huge jump just a better connection but it was quite a jump. I am very pleased to let you know this product is working excellent for me and was not difficult by any means to set up. Also connected my tv in the furthest room from the modem to this extender where videos used to buffer and have connection issues. Now it s 100 hassle free to watch Netflix, amazon prime, or anything else that involves streaming. Very nicely done ASUS, I am one happy customer.

I used netgear products for about 20-25 years. Their lastest products were not up to srcatch. I did some research and found the asus rt-ax56u. Asus tech support in Australia were great. I had some core requirements: wifi authentication without dhcp, mac access control for wireless clients and the ability to turn the wireless signals off and on using the router s web application. Asus tech support confirmed the router would perform as I required. I bought the router from amazon USA because it was cheaper than in Australia. I always try to buy in Australia first. In spite of the closed international borders due to the pandemic, amazon had it delivered in about a week after they were paid. Because the router can be set up in different modes, the initial basic configuration MUST be done using a wizard. The default is the conventional Wireless Router Mode. I chose the Access Point Mode because it (literally) fitted perfectly with my operational requirements. I also had a quick look at the default mode. The Asus dhcp server allows you to specify a default route. This is a very useful feature I have never seen before in this type of equipment. This is a small wifi router, which is exactly what I wanted and it looks nice. I did the firmware upgrade within the router s web application. It worked perfectly. I am still using the old netgear power adapter because we have different power plugs in Australia. I intend to buy a universal power plug which will enable me to use the adapter sold with rt-ax56u. The setup was easy. I extremely pleased with my purchase.

Worked great right out of the box. Connected it up on Ethernet Backhaul and received full 2x2 80MHz speed, could not have been easier. On 500 500 Mbps Fibre Internet I am getting 469 417 Mbps 25 feet from the access point connected WIFI 5 (ac) and at the same range connected WIFI5 (ax) I am getting 507 507 Mbps the same as if I was using the wired connection. The Backhaul seems to add around 2ms to the ping times.

After 12 years with my old (Apple AirPort Extreme) router, and working from home, it was time to upgrade. I live by myself in a 1 bedroom 600 SF apartment, with a 200MBps standard plan through Spectrum here in NYC. I have 12 devices in total that connect to WiFi, with up to 6 running at one time. My iMac and Apple TV 4K require the most demanding for streaming, but also plan to subscribe to a HD music streaming service sometime in the future. Always one to research, I didn t want to get more than needed, but also wanted to future proof as much as possible. This router fit the bill for me. Its installed where my old router was, in a small, centrally located closet in the living room. Understood it s not advisable by many, but it s the only option without having to core through 100 year old walls, or having the router visible, which I would rather not! Following the setup, I ran two signal strength tests to my iMac desktop, which is the furthest from the router, at a desk in my bedroom. One test was run with an Ethernet wired connection (25ft cable), and another with WiFi. Both tests had the same result, topping at 217 MBps for downloads, and 11.2MBps for uploads, which is basically what my internet plan is rated for. My old router would get around 78 MBps downloads, which is around what it was rated for. There have been the occasional dropouts, but after going onto the Spectrum app, it confirmed my area was having connection issues, so not the fault of the router. One time I even brought out my 25ft Ethernet cable to connect to my computer from the modem, same issue, ruling out the router being the problem. Very happy with this router so far. I do keep up with the firmware updates. The app is fantastic, but can be a little daunting for someone who is not very tech savvy. t had the need to contact support, so no comment on that.

I first had lots of pain trying to get AI Mesh to work on this repeater so I wanted to share how I got it to work. Setting it up: Ignore the AI Mesh guide and set it up as a repeater first!! (important! this will save you alot of grief) 1) I first tried to set the repeater up using the app and it was fine but the app and repeater was unresponsive very often. I couldn t connect to the repeater interface no matter what I tried. I kept getting Authentication Failed - If you have this issue, give the repeater some time after set up (30min 1 hr) . Hard close your app interface and then relaunch it. The IP address for the repeater may change to something else. You can now log onto the interface. 2) I then hard reset and tried connecting the repeater with WPS mode. WPS was disabled by default and I had to enable it by logging into my router. Once enabled (I started it in the router interface: Wireless WPS), I pressed the physical WPS button on the router(5seconds) then proceeded to press the WPS button (5seconds) and gave it about 3-5minutes. The connection established and the app detected the connection. Again here I waited an additional 30min-1hr after connection for the IP to change in the app. Using the WPS method, the web interface automatically knows to use your ASUS router s credentials to manage. 3) Now that the repeater was working, I logged into the web interface using the shortcut found in the app (it routes you to the IP DNS of the repeater on your browser. I logged in using my router credentials and poked through the settings. Here is where you can change your repeater into an AI MESH node. I switched it to the AI Mesh node configuration and applied it. From there on, you follow a few short steps. 4) With the repeater ready to be part of the AI Mesh network, I then logged into the router again and it allowed me to add the AI MESH node. It failed at first but I just tried again (the wait time was about 10 minutes to complete). You will then see the node point in the router settings. I highly recommend the ASUS app to manage the endpoints on the nodes and to see what is connected to what. 5) I m not sure if this step is necessary, but after all the configuration was complete I rebooted the Router and all the devices started connecting automatically to the Testing -- I tested by walking my phone towards each node and seeing it jump from one node to another pretty quickly. Now all the devices in my house can enjoy a 5ghz connection and I can continue to easily manage every connected endpoint. Hope this helps! I will update if anything changes.

If you have a high-speed broadband connection, your cheap router (mine was a TP-Link) is probably robbing you of the speed you are paying for. I have a 1-gigabit subscription but was only getting about 650mbit using the the TP-Link. This is the problem with 60 routers, it seems. As soon as I plugged in the Asus RT-AX56U AX1800 I ran a speed test (ethernet) and I m very pleased. I m now getting the full 1-gig that I pay for. Also, you can split the 2.4 5GHz bands into 2 different SSIDs if you want. The router s webpage setup is easy. Highly recommended. I can t comment on the Wi-Fi yet, I ll update review later. Later: Wi-Fi works great. I have a new laptop that has the Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200 card with Bluetooth 5.1. It immediately connected using the 802.11ax protocol at 5 GHz. Good range and fast speed. Phone connected on the 2.4 GHz band and slightly older laptop connected via its 802.11ac card. All are working well. Strong and steady signal using this router. No complaints. If you use a VPN service, there is a place in the router s setup for you to enter the provider s settings so that all your devices are protected online through the router. One caveat: Like most routers these days, it comes with WPS enabled. WPS is a security vulnerability. After upgrading the firmware, I went to wireless settings, the WPS tab and disabled WPS. Any hacker kid with the right software can crack your network if you have WPS enabled. So it s best to turn it off. WPS doesn t really do anything except make it easier for people to get on your wi-fi with push-button access. In the router s settings you can switch the WPS button on the router to be a wi-fi on off button. Very handy when you want to quickly disable your wi-fi. I wish I could speak to more of the router s features but there are so many that I am not familiar with. If you re a network guru, you ll probably love this router due to the many options you have, most of which I don t know how to use so I just leave them alone. I thought I would have to pay much more for a router strong enough to get my full speed but, thankfully, I was wrong about that.
