I enjoyed these a lot when I was a kid; I had about 40 gallons of them. Now I m a mechanical designer, and I work almost exclusively with people who had these when they were kids (and lego too...but those are crazy expensive and the new models are mostly licensed stuff; they are not very creative). Bought for a little girl who likes making stuff out of cups, pop sickle sticks, etc for her birthday. She was overjoyed, in spite of getting much more expensive gifts from others. An educational toy that makes a kid turn away from Nintendo...for under 40...and finding a mechanical engineer or designer that didn t have them isn t easy. What more do you need to know? One tip...this comes with instructions for 70 models. If you can get away with it, remove these and throw them away. The value here is what can be created from the imagination; not what can be created from an instruction sheet. Another tip...while these appear to be for little kids, they actually have a lot of value for middle and high school students as well. Some schools even have competitions like, 34;Make a bridge using only these parts, the winner is the bridge that can hold the most weight

My 6-year old LOVES these K nex! He can do it all on his own and will spend hours on end building. PROS: engaging, great model instructions, brightly colored pieces, great activity to help mind building, good quality strong pieces. CONS: not enough pieces to build more than 1 model at a time (for most models), it s hard to snap some of the configurations together, wish the box would serve better as a storage container. I purchased a plastic bin and a small fishing box with divide ship compartments to hold the small little pieces, which helped immensely with the clean up and organization of the pieces. Overall, awesome product. Will be buying more to supplement for more building fun.

I bought this as a gift for my 7 year old son s birthday. He and his little brother (5) play with Legos for hours and hours and I thought this would be a nice change of pace for them. They have been having fun making new things out of the pieces, but are definitely having a difficult time following the instructions. I sat with them and helped them put together one of the pieces and was surprised K nex didn t do a better job making the instructions easier for a 7 year old, i.e. tell how many pieces of each per item, how the item goes together, etc. The instructions basically just have pictures and you have to figure out how to construct the item. Once I got him started with laying out the pieces and showing him how to put it together, my son was able to help me, but he definitely wouldn t have been able to figure out such a complicated design without better instruction or hands on help. I m happy I bought this for them and they are playing with it, but 90 of the time they are back to their ole faithful Legos.

I bought this big general K Nex box of parts to supplement another general set and several 34; sets that are for specific projects. The kids like to build projects, but the results are often so beautiful that we hate to dismantle them to provide enough pieces for the next project. There are instructions for several projects included in the box with this set, and, now, plenty of pieces. The difference in the instructions with this set and the others is that in the Maker sets, the instructions are laid out in steps, and with each step there is a parts count for the step. This provides a more efficient building process than looking at the diagram, retrieving the necessary parts, then discovering while building that we really needed, say, 5 yellow stars, not three. I put out small muffin pans to help organize the pieces. The little guy, 3.5 years old, is really too young to complete more than the very simplest projects, but he likes to build while his older brother does. We decided that since the box says it is for ages 7 and up, that he could be 3.5, and I would be 3.5, and together we d be seven and could build the projects together.

My 4 year old (almost 5) absolutely loves this K NEX set. He s young so initially we had to help him learn to follow the instructional and help him snap pieces together, but after about a month he can now do most of the designs completely on his own. The instructions are different from Lego s in that they show a natural progression rather than going step-by-step, but if a 4 year old can figure it out then I think the instructions are pretty good. I love this set because kids can make so many different things; so far he s made the flower, swordfish, airplane, jellyfish, picnic basket, high dive, windsurfer (my personal favorite because it moves). This is an incredible bargain compared with Legos. I also appreciate that it helps him think logically, learn to follow instructions, and develops fine and gross motor skills. And it keeps him totally entertained for 30-60 minutes. Amazing toy at an amazing price. We ll buy more.

Got this for our 10yo son for Christmas. He LOVES K NEX anyway, and already has a small set, but this was a hit for sure! He was so excited to build the images on the box, that he dove right in and started experimenting. Once we got home from the day s festivities, he combined his 2 sets together to make 1 mega set that he hasn t stopped playing with since. K NEX are definitely a must-have in our home, and both of our kids love them. And we, as parents, love that it lets the kids use their imagination while also doing a little science (without even knowing it!)

This is a ton of fun for kids that are interested in building. I bought this for my eight year old as he is really into legos and he Loves them! There are a lot of building options in this box alone and comes with a wonderful instruction manual. It sure beats spending an arm and a leg on a ton of different lego sets when you can build so much at this price! He still Loves his legos but these are played with just as much. Awesome purchase!

I bought this as a gift for a family with three kids ranging from 5-9 when we went to spend the weekend. This toy was amazing. We didnt see the kids the whole weekend. They came up for meals and than went right back down to continue building. The instructions were difficult to follow. It would be better if the instructions were like the lego instructions that give step by step instructions with which pieces to use.Even without the instructions though the kids still loved it, they just used their imagination to try and recreate the models on the box. The toy itself deserves a five star review but I took one star off due to the poor instructions.

I bought this set to supplement a starter set that came in a red plastic tub. Good decision. This set fits in the plastic tub with the other set (this set comes in a cardboard box that did not hold up to the opening and closing done by a seven year old), and provides plenty of pieces for us to build several creations at once. Note that all the directions for the creations shown in the box are not in the paper instructions included with the set. You have to go online to find those, but that is easy enough to do.

I love that there are so many different things to create. It s fun and wonderful for kids and adults. We bought this for our grandson for Christmas. I will say the box came in severely damaged, but Amazon quickly replaced it. Not only does our grandson love it. We enjoy building things with him. The only downside (and the reason for 4 stars) is that there is no storage container for all the pieces. Who is going to store them in the cardboard box they come in? That won t last long. We had to purchase a container for all the pieces. Regardless of that, it s still a fabulous toy.
