This could easily be used as an actual pot holder, in comparison to the cheapie ones from big box and dollar stores, which might just melt if used on a pan that's too hot, or they may not protect your hand or table top. These will though! The colors are deep, and the loops not quite as stretchy, but that's because they are made of a more durable material than the others. The metal loom does not have hooks on the sides like the breakable plastic ones, just small round nubs that you can use and that do hold the loops. After the looming is done, when you get to the finishing part where you are working with braiding the end, (if a kid is the one creating the pot holder) the child will probably need an adult's help because the loops easily come off the end of the loom and that can be frustrating for young kids. My daughter is 8 years old and she loves this, but quickly became frustrated at the end, I guess that is the same with the cheapie loom too though. The kids will need help pushing the loops down regularly also because since they are a little thicker than the cheap ones they don't slide as easily and can create a little bit of a hump as you are looming. In my opinion, I like this better than the ones from the big box stores because they are more like a craft item and less like a child's toy. It's the next step up and comes with additional challenges, but it's unquestionably worth the effort.

this just like what I had as a kid... well made...and fun, it does get hard once your close to the end... and the instructions were a bit confusing, maybe more pictures for the completing the tie off, but she loved it and we managed to get it done... great and aged perfect and will grow with her, she herself said once i do a few of the pot holders I would like to make the purse.... so yes great....

Perfect size for kids. Quality product. The loops that came with the kit are really so much better than hobby store ones. For potholders you should always use cotton loops. The nylon and synthetic ones can melt and cause burns. You get what you pay for. Really nice kit with heavy duty well made. metal loom, wire weaving tool, and crochet hook for help with finishing/ removing from loom. Clear written illustrated instructions. My granddaughters love it.

I got this because my nieces made some potholders like these many years ago, and they needed to be replaced. I like and used their potholders for all these years, so I thought I'd get this and make some more. I like the ones I've made and they work perfectly.

This is a popular activity in my kids' Montessori school, and now I know why. After buying this for another child's birthday, my son wanted his own, so we now have one. You can get creative with your designs. The work is somewhat challenging, since the tension requires some dexterity and effort to weave the loops. I made a few myself and found the activity so calming, like a zen adult coloring book. This is a nice quality metal loom that comes with a sturdy metal hook. This is so much more than a "toy." It's a wonderful activity that produces a useful product.

This is a wonderful potholder loom, and it's obvious that the creators really care about getting kids interested in weaving. I had a plastic one as a child, and, though I loved it, it "gave" so much that the resulting potholders were quite small. The enameled metal of this loom is strong and doesn't give, yielding larger results. Harrisville also includes a crochet hook, metal tool for weaving, and ideas for how to use the potholders to create a few projects other than potholders (like a sleeping bag for a stuffed animal and a rug). Those projects will require the purchase of extra cotton loops.

I got this loom for use with a craft book for adults (_The Woven Bag_ by Noreen Crone-Findlay) that utilizes the loom in a modular way to make bags with yarn, rather than cotton loops. Yet, I made the potholders the kit makes, as well. There are only enough loops to make two in the basic set, and the second is really "leftovers" (with little room for creativity) if you make the first with a similar design to the one on the box. That being said, I want to encourage others to think outside of potholders when using this loom. It's a great introduction to weaving that doesn't have to be limited to cotton loops and potholders.

Lots of us recall our potholder-making days as kids, and perhaps even the potholder-making days of our own kids. I am now on the potholder-making process for my grandkids, and it has been truly fun. This kit is especially good because the loops are not synthetic, so the potholders can actually be used, unlike the synthetic loops available out there. The only thing I'd suggest is to get a long crochet hook for a child to use on this weaving. It is SO much easier! LOVE watching my sweet grandkids pay attention to what they are doing, to be mindful about the process and to interact with one of their grown-ups to get the task completed. Good relationship-building craft. I used this with my 5 and with my 6 year-old grands, a girl and a boy. Both loved their finished product as well as the process of picking colors and seeing the process unfold!

I like this loom however I prefer using yarn rather than the loops that go with it. The loops are rather tight. When using yarn weaving is a much more enjoyable experience. There are videos on you tube that demonstrate weaving with yarn. I had one of these potholder looms when I was a kid and was motivated to purchase this purely by nostalgia. I have enjoyed using this loom and plan to make other projects other than potholders and coasters by sewing the squares together. This is a good loom but if anyone finds the loops to be a little frustrating, then I recommend weaving on it with yarn. You'll find it much more enjoyable.

I love the metal loom, won't break. The hooks that came with it are very useful and easy for the kiddos to use.

I bought this loom for myself (age 66), although I'll be making potholders with my granddaughter, as well. The tools provided with the loom work great and I like the quality of the loops. I'm also pleased to support a Made in USA product! I'll be ordering more loops and will make potholders for everyone in my family. Fun!
