When I first laid eyes on the Pilot Precise V5 RT Retractable pen, it was at a convenience store (a national chain found all over the U.S.). Of course I had to buy it - I love fine-point pens, and how often do you come across a 0.5mm pen at a convenience store? I began using it in my journal, and I was impressed immediately.

The lines are fine but vivid, and it writes smoothly without skipping. For being a relatively inexpensive pen - it was about $4 for a two-pack - it also looks pretty good. It has a rubber grip and metal clip, and the barrel is a grey that looks almost like metal from a distance. It’s also fairly comfortable to hold, and I have to admit that I prefer the click-top pens over anything else.

It’s a great pen overall, but I can’t say it comes without any issues. First, the rolling ball style ink can smear a bit with a heavy hand; a problem particularly for left-handed writers. Second, although it’s a reusable pen, it is hard to find the ink refills out at the store. The convenience store I originally bought the pens at certainly doesn’t carry any refills. And looking online, the refills are each about the same price as an entirely new V5 pen, which pretty well defeats the purpose of it being reusable.

These issues aside, the Pilot Precise V5 RT is a pretty great retractable pen. If you’re someone who likes a finer-point pen, you’ll definitely enjoy writing with it.

These are my favorite pens in the world. I am very particular about pens and have gone through phases with various different ones - and these have been my favorite of all for the last few years. Nothing has topped them yet!
It's funny when you find other pen snobs. People will notice what you are writing with and pull their favorite pen from their bag or pocket. I found out that my friend is also particular about her pens, and after trying this pen, she actually admitted that she liked it better than hers!
They are a little pricey, but they are also the only pens I like using, so I pay the extra amount.
What I like:
I like the feel of writing with it - the way that the tip feels against the paper when I write. And I like the way it looks - clean and thin lines, but not too thin. It is the perfect pen to my Goldilocks taste.
Highly recommend.

I bought a whole bunch of refills for these pens all at once. For some reason, a good number of the refills were defective. They would write beautifully until I have used approximately 1/3 of the ink (two-thirds was still left) and then would act as if there was no more ink in the tube. They just stopped writing.

Originally, I gave the refills 3 stars. I decided to bump it to 4 because when I contacted Pilot about the problem, they sent me new free refills and a couple of extra freebies for my trouble. If I was rating their customer service alone, I would have given them 5 stars. But, I hate spending good money on something and having it not work only part way through the process, so I had to take a star away for the actual product.

I should probably say that I have been using these pens for years and it was only recently that I ever had a problem. If it had only been one pack, I would have still given them 5 stars, because no one is perfect all of the time, but it was a total of 3 packs that stopped working and they aren't cheap enough to just toss them with 2/3 ink still in them.

I admit it, I'm one of 'those' people that get super excited about pens. I love them. Don't know why, it's just my 'thang'. Despite my unrelenting quest, I have not yet found the PERFECT pen - but this is about as close as I've come. The grip is darn near perfect, not too think, not too thin. The weight is very comfortable. I love this retractable version! I actually like the V7 a bit better, but the V5 is still a class of it's own. I LOVE the needle point!!! - I think that's my favorite part of the Pilot Precise. I don't know what kind of ink Pilot uses, but it flows so smoothly, I just love it. It's good for lefties too! The ONLY complaint I could possibly make is that one can not write on 2 sides of a paper with this ink... the ink doesn't bleed ALL the way through, but when filling out forms front & back, there's definitely evidence of the writing on the other side of the paper. That just looks so tacky to me. So when filling out forms that have front & back, I have to resort to using another pen (ball point is pretty safe from bleed through) --- which kind of defeats the purpose of me carrying around my "ONE FAVORITE PEN!!" if I have to resort to using a separate pen when using both sides of a paper.... And I love to journal, and of coarse I use my FAVORITE PEN to journal, but then I end up only using one side of my notebooks paper, which doesn't seem very 'green' of me... But, I love the Pilot Precise so much I am able to overlook this minor flaw. I still recommend it, and it's still, BY FAR, my favorite pen! Second place goes to Sharpie pens.

I've gone thru zillions of different pens looking for a pen that:

* Dries fast
* Doesn't skip, writes a consistent line thickness
* Writes just as well on paper AND on index cards without skipping (or gathering microscopic paper threads)
* Available in more than black ink
* Is retractable
* Has a good metal clip
* Sits well in a shirt pocket (isn't so long/clip so high that the pen tip is hitting the bottom of the pocket)
* Well-balanced, not too heavy, not too light-weight
* Reasonably priced

Recently, I ran across an old black Precise V5 that I had stashed in a drawer about 10 years ago... not only did it still write, it wrote well and met all of the criteria above... I was stunned! I later remembered that I had used these back in High School & College. I don't know why I ever gave them up!

Highly recommend!

Regarding colors in the V5 retractable series, they're also available in Violet. In the non-retractable, you can find Precise V5's in a 7-pack that includes Violet, Pink, and Turquoise.

P.S. I ordered this very 4-pack from Amazon.com and received them about a week ago... they wrote perfectly right out of the package (once I removed the little protective plastic balls from the needle-tips).

These are my favorite type of pen. Rolling balls are smooth and take a beating without leaking or exploding.

Sadly most retailers are starting to pull them from their shelves as they are being replaced by the Acroball series, which while being respectable pens are not as smooth or reliable as the precise V5's.

I absolutely love these pens. I have purchased probably 5 sets of these over the last year and I can't say enough about them. They write extremely well and always produce clean lines. I like to use these to underline in books but many pens don't work that well for underlining. I use a metal drafting ruler and the problem I run into is that most pens will accumulate large amounts of ink on the tips when you use them to draw straight lines with a ruler. It is hard then to keep that ink from blotting on your paper or from getting on your hands. These pens never have that problem which is why I love them so much. I have never had one leak in my pocket as other pens have in the past and this is a huge plus as well. These work great and I would highly recommend them.

One of my favorite pens. I switch between this one, the traditional .38 G2, and my Vanishing Point Pilot fountain pen. This one feels like there is a little suspension when you write and is not as scratchy as the Pilot .38 or XF Vanishing Point. It writes a little thicker than the other 2 though as a compromise but it's still a fine point.

These are my new pens-of-choice! They write a clean, fine line. They stand up to my heavy-hand writing style. Smooth, consistent flow of ink.

The only “diwnside” for me is that, unlike the other colors, there doesn’t seem to be a refill available for the green ink pen. I don’t understand that oversight. But, great pens!

I'm addicted to pens and all kinds of office supplies. Well, these do NOT disappoint. I will not get the xtra fine tip again, it's just a little too thin, I need girth. But, otherwise I love them. I love the way they write and they feel good in my hand.
