A breakthrough recognition system will allow drones to fly 10 times faster and not crash



Engineers from the University of Zurich (Switzerland) have introduced a fundamentally new collision prevention system for drones - nothing faster and more accurate in the world yet.

They assumed that reaction speeds of 20-40 milliseconds, like many commercial unmanned systems, were not sufficient to organize the safe movement of high-speed flying drones.

To demonstrate the capabilities of their child, the Swiss used a bouncer game, teaching drones to virtuosly evade balls flying into them.

The problem with the time of drone response to obstacles has two roots.

First, the high speed of the aircraft compared to the ground.

Second, weak computing power, which makes the on-board systems unable to analyze the situation and recognize the interference.

As a solution, engineers replaced the sensors with "event cameras," raising the reaction rate to 3.5 milliseconds.

The camera of events in a deystviikamer of events reacts only to change of brightness of separate pixels in a shot and ignores other therefore it needs to process very few information to find a moving object on a static or inactive background.

Hence the high reaction rate, but practical experiments have revealed that neither the existing drones nor the cameras themselves are suitable for this purpose.

The merit of Swiss engineers is that they converted both the cameras and the quadrocopters platform, plus developed the necessary algorithms, effectively creating a new system.

When playing a bouncer drone with such a system in 90 & nbsp;% of cases has time to evade the ball, which is thrown at it at a speed of 10 m/s from a distance of only 3 m.

And this if there is only one camera, if the size of the interference is known in advance - and the presence of two cameras allows it to calculate all parameters of the interference and make the necessary decision.

Now engineers are working to check the system in motion, when flying on complex routes.

According to their calculations, as a result UAVs will be able to fly ten times faster than now, without the risk of collision.
