Repairs in Martian: NASA engineers brought the bur of the InSight machine back to work by knocking a shovel on it

NASA engineers have once again proved that they are able to solve the most non-trivial tasks in the most difficult conditions.

The precedent occurred with the Martian InSight module - during the trial drilling the instrument of the apparatus stuck in the ground of the Red Planet and the operators of the Martian found a highly unusual way out of position.

They gave the Mars rover an order...

to hit itself with a shovel.

And it worked! The decision was extremely timely - the drill of the "Heat Flow and Physical Properties Package" tool was to penetrate the planet 's soil to a depth of 5 meters or more for the first time in the history of Mars research.

The purpose of the mission is to study the heat flows under the crust of Mars and to try to determine how cold the planet actually cooled.

This is a very difficult operation, and the stuck drill turned it into an engineering nightmare at all.

Instead of a pliable sand mixture, the drill came across a hard lumpy ground.

It was impossible to throw the instrument, so NASA engineers spent several months creating models and simulations designed to free it.

If the drill itself is strong enough, the wires suitable to it are very easy to break, and it was necessary to beat with a shovel extremely accurately.

The attempt proved successful and became, according to the mission leaders, a valuable experience.

The InSight apparatus still has a lot of work to do on the surface of Mars and the presence of the right blade in the manipulator will be very convenient! On such a layout the methods of "release" of the drill were worked out
