I was looking for a replacement for my Google WiFi mesh network because I had not been getting good connection between the mesh points in my 2-bedroom apartment without connecting them to the main one through Ethernet powerline plugs and cables.
I have a 300/30 plan from Cox and I was getting around 160/30 and 80/30 speeds in my bedrooms (ping 12-16) if the mesh points were connected wirelessly and 250/30 (ping 8-12) in case they were wired.
After I installed the Orbi set I could get rid of 2 network switches , powerline set, lots of Ethernet wires and put my Googe WiFi tri-pack on sale))
Now I am getting 340/30 in the family room where the router is installed and 275/30 in both bedrooms.
I also noticed that instead of an RBR40 router I got an RBR50 which is better.
However, it is not a part of the RBK43 set that I purchased.
Also, I chose to use the Circle service to be able to pause individual devices on my local network, and accidentally paused all of them incuding my smartphone.
Now I cannot find the way to unpause the network unless I turn off the Circe thing completely.
Once I turn it back on I lose Internet in all my home devices((

Super simple app based setup, great performance, nothing bad to say about this gear at all.

Please note a revision to this review-
I couldn’t post this review on the exact item as there was no listing for it as purchased. This is written pertaining to a NEW unit, not the RENEWED unit.
A few disclosures at the front end.
I did not buy this from Amazon but instead from Best Buy. No slight to Amazon but once I decided to take the leap I was going to do so that day.
I paid retail. I’d seen numerous reviews where the writer got their unit for free to test. I’m not a part of that program but I’d love to know how to be.
My home is +/- 4600 sq ft. I was replacing an Apple Extreme and 3 Expresses. It was a network I built some eight years ago and served me well until like a Christmas tree I hung too many ornaments. Thirty devices had slowed access to a crawl and I was tired of breaks and drops.
Before I did anything with the kit, I ran line speed tests from ten different locations in my home. I used the same device for testing and accessed the same server each time. I repeated each test twice to allow for network variations.
Spoiler Alert- if you’re looking for the fastest answer here, after the Orbi network was running, the worst line speed test was twice that of the previous network. The more common increase was 3 to 5 times faster. I won’t get into the debate of actual throughput but suffice to say that the performance with every device and every location was enormously better. The signal reception and response of every device improved- upstairs, downstairs, and either end of the house despite that the router still resides at the far west end and I’m using the same modem as before.
I had read that many were unhappy about the mobile app’s control features. I’m not an IT manager for NASA but the mobile app tells me everything I need or want to know and all the control I might want.
A few quirks that I must mention. I had no trouble bringing the network up but not long afterwards the second satellite unit disappeared from the network. Nothing I could do would revive it. I had basically given up when it suddenly reappeared and has been there ever since. No answer for that.
The network manager tells you what each device on the network is, what band it is using (2.4 or 5) or plugged (wired) to the main router or satellite. It allowed me to change the name and/or device type on each. However, another quirk showed up at this time. One satellite showed five unnamed devices wired (plugged) into it. I found that odd because 1) I knew there was only one device plugged in and 2) there are only two LAN ports on the unit. The app allows you to pause service to any device on the network and so I did so on the phantom devices. The network performance didn’t change with them on or off which came as no great surprise since a phantom device draws no bandwidth. Just an odd circumstance.
I am giving this unit four stars only because I have not had enough time to gauge the consistency and stability after only five days but neither has varied during that time. Give me a month and I may go to five stars.
