Apple Mac Mini MD387LL/A Desktop - 2.5GHz Intel Core i5, 4gb Memory, 500gb Hard Drive (Renewed)

The Apple Mac mini "Core i5" 2.5 (Late 2012/Aluminum Unibody) features a 22-nm "Ivy Bridge" 2.5 GHz Intel "Core i5" (3210M) processor with two independent processor "cores" on a single chip, a 3 MB shared level 3 cache, 4 GB of 1600 MHz DDR3 SDRAM (PC3-12800) memory, a 500 GB hard drive, and Intel HD Graphics 4000 which shares system memory. It does not have an internal optical drive, although an external one was offered for US$79. Connectivity includes a Firewire "800" port, four USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, Thunderbolt, combined "audio line in (digital/analog)" and combined "audio line out/headphone (digital/analog)" minijacks, a 10/100/1000Base-T Gigabit Ethernet port, 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and an SDXC card slot. Compared to its predecessor, this model looks identical, but it has a faster internal architecture with a faster processor, faster graphics, faster RAM, and USB 3.0 ports. All Mac mini systems are configured by default without a display, keyboard, or mouse.

I honestly don't know what to expect from a "refurbished" product. Sometimes you get a good one, sometimes not. I took a chance with this company and the Mac Mini I received is a good example of it being done right.

The case was nearly perfect, no scratches or dents anywhere to be seen. It came well packaged to help it stay that way in transit as well, very nice. The only thing that I noticed was after removing the bottom cover, there was still quite a bit of dust present, like it wasn't properly air dusted prior to sending it out. A few blasts of compressed air fixed that right up.

As for performance, this is as close to stock configuration as it gets, with a pokey now six year old 5400 rpm notebook hard drive that's as slow now as it was when it was new. 4 GB's of ram aren't helping either. Of course being the 2012 model, both are pretty easy to update which is of course what I did. I added a 500GB Crucial SSD and added 16GB of ram from OWC. Both really woke this baby up and allows for it to run as good as the newest ones easily. A bump up to the latest Mojave OSX also did wonders here.

As an aside, if you want to run at a screen resolution better than HDMI's maximum 1080p you'll need to buy a mini DisplayPort (Thunderbolt) to full sized DisplayPort cable to get it to it's full potential which in my case was 1440p. Obviously you need a monitor that has a DisplayPort as well.

All told, for the money, this is still a viable choice when needing a decent Apple computer without breaking the bank. Recommended!

I brought this specifically because I could upgrade the ram and put in a SSD drive. Now it's running with 16 Gb ram and a 1Tb SSD. The best thing of all is I did it myself. Not that it was a major feat but with everything on the mainboard you can't do that now.

This review is for a renewed MD387LL/A from the seller "Kanga Supply". The first thing I did was boot the machine to verify the "About this Mac" data matched the expected technical info for a MD387LL/A, and it did. MacOS 10.14.3 was pre-installed on the hard drive. As far as I can tell the unit arrived in perfect working condition.

The 2012 Mac minis are the last of the fully upgradable Macs, and I opened and upgraded this mini with 16 GB RAM and a new 512 SSD drive from Amazon. With these upgrades, the Mac performs very well with macOS Mojave, even though it's a 7 year old machine. For light work such as web browsing, Word documents, email, etc., this makes a perfectly suitable machine.

I deducted a star from the rating because when I opened the unit it was filthy inside. "Renewed" means "to make like new again", and this machine was definitely much dirtier than new. After partially disassembling the unit, I was able to use a can of compressed air to blow out the dust bunnies from the motherboard, fan, etc., and wipe down the interior surfaces. Also, there was a pair of small deep scratches on the outside of the case, which was the only real blemish. (See photos.) However, I keep the mini out of sight, so the scratch is not a big deal to me.

Note these machines are capable of displaying 4K @ 30 Hz, but the mouse response time is agonizingly slow. I chose the Dell E2318HX from Amazon, which is a decent 1080p monitor, and obviously it doesn't support HiDPI display, but it works perfectly with this Mac at 1080p @ 60 Hz.

Starts very slow, opens programs slow. Assuming they put a lower end hard drive in during refurbishing. Am looking to replace the memory and HDD with an SDD in the near future. This option will still save me hundreds versus buying a comparative machine new. Works great for what it is.

I'm very pleased with this Mac Mini. It is in pristine condition inside and out and ran perfectly "out of the box". No dirt or dust or even so much as a fingerprint smudge anywhere. That all adds up to one thing - it has lived its entire life in a highly protected environment. Most likely in a climate controlled server room in a server rack and has never seen the inside of a cluttered junk filled backpack or a dusty desk or coffee table

As advertised, it does indeed look and run like new. That's good and bad since in spite of how good it looks and how clean it is, a 2012 Mac Mini with 4GB of RAM and an ancient 5400 RPM spinning HDD running on an obsolete MacOS version (El Capitan) HAS to be slow (and it was - REAL slow). I ordered it knowing I would have to upgrade the OS and RAM and replace the old HDD with a SSD. But, I was expecting to be upgrading a normal consumer model Mini and was surprised at how different the internals of this Server model were compared to regular consumer models I had seen. It took some thinking and some imagination (and jury rigging special tools that I didn't have) but I managed both upgrades just fine and the Mini is now transformed. It is running perfectly on MacOS Mojave and with its obsolete old 5400 RPM spinning HDD having been replaced by a new 1TB SSD and its woefully inadequate 4GB of RAM having been upgraded with 16GB of RAM, it is genuinely "snappy" and I think anyone would be surprised by, and pleased with, its performance now

Anyone considering buying one of these older Mini's needs to remember that the 2012 model is the FINAL truly upgradable Mini. Apple began soldering components to the MB in 2013 and it is nearly impossible for anyone but the most experienced and well trained pro to make any changes. If you buy a 2013 or newer model, you need to be prepared to "run what you bought" and don't plan on doing any upgrades

Mac Mini arrived very well packaged with a fresh install of High Sierra. After account setup the machine has performed well over the past 24 hour stress test (Boinc @ 100%/90% processor utilization). This Mac Mini only has HDMI and Thunderbolt outputs for video and did not come with the original HDMI to DVI adapter, if the Mac Mini is to be hooked to a non HDMI monitor you will need a Thunderbolt video adapter or HDMI to DVI/VGA adapter which can be purchased for around $10. Review will be updated as necessary.

When my 2011 MacBook Pro (bought new) graphics card destroyed itself (which I learned they ALL eventually will), I had no computer for my one-person business. I bought this Mac Mini, popped in the old MacBook Pro hard drive and was up and running while I searched for a laptop replacement. When I eventually found a good, used 2012 MacBook Pro, I put the hard drive from the Mini into it and put the Mini into the closet. Now I NEVER have to worry about being computer-less in my business.
NOTE: If you get a Mac Mini, I suggest taking off the back and using canned air to clean it out, where was a lot of dust bunnies inside.

When I purchased this, I was looking for an affordable Mac to use as a second desktop. I support users with who have various different machines and having this for a reference was my goal. Little did I imagine how delighted I would be with my purchase.

As with any computer 6 or 7 years after launch, you will not be getting a machine with more modern performance, but don't let that dissuade you. Out of the box, it's rather slow, but still can handle the most recent version of Mac OS (Mojave at the time of writing).

That being said, if you have even the most basic of technical skills and are up to doing a fairly minor upgrade, you are in for a treat. This is the last Mac Mini that has upgradeable RAM and disks. After upgrading it to a full 16GB of RAM and replacing the hard drive with an SSD, the difference in performance is (as they say) like night and day. The upgrade task itself was relatively painless, but does require some tools you may not have in your arsenal. A quick Amazon search will find you some very inexpensive kits that will have you covered.

The computer is now fast, responsive, and a delight to use. You're still going to be limited by the performance of the other last-generation components inside, so you won't be blasting away in modern AAA games or crunching the most demanding of computing jobs, but your daily use will be as snappy and responsive as you could hope.

This computer is literally what you make of it, so keep that in mind when deciding to purchase. it does take some minor effort, but you can have a very nice machine for entry-level pricing.

A note for the Windows users looking at this: If you're looking for a way to explore the Mac world without breaking the bank, this is a good way to go.

I have purchased refurbished computers before but this would have to be one of the best. The model is excellent for my needs. It is not current but can run the most current OS and software. What impressed me most is that the company that "Renews" it and ships it did a great job. It looked like brand new and was packaged very well for shipping. I recommend it!

I added more memory after I received the Mac Mini (late 2012) I have seen many reviews from various sources about how dirty the insides were. This machine was spotless on the inside and perfect on the outside. Have been very pleased. I plan to add an SSD in a short time. These little machines are amazing with the ease they are to expand and increase their speed. I repeat, I am very pleased.
